Paying it Forward between the 2010 cities: North Shore to Whistler

Kelly Oswald speaks with host Nicole Fitzgerald from Shaw Cable’s weekly program, The Express, as cameraman, Jacob Gish catches the action.

The North Shore, Squamish and Whistler will be ‘Paying it Forward’ for the next six weeks. Regardless of the stock markets, interest rates, the world economy or elections, these communities are out to pick up spirits and encourage good will.
Pay it Forward, is the story of a young boy who sets out to change the world into a nicer place through random acts of kindness.
The theory is that if someone did you a favor and you paid it forward to 3 people… and the next day they each paid it forward to three more… and the day after that those 27 people paid it forward to another three... and each day, everyone in turn paid it forward to three more people… in two weeks that comes to 4,782,969 people. And so on.
Kelly Oswald of Whistler and Vera Gibson of North Vancouver joined forces to bridge their communities with good-deed awareness by engaging the support of the Whistler Question, the Chief (Squamish) and the North Shore News.

What is the ‘Pay it Forward’ program? Simply put, it is a free program designed to encourage us to be consciously nice to each other. The idea is geared to create an actively positive environment and enhance our sense of community through neighbourly gestures. Although we live in pretty up-beat communities already; Pay it Forward brings awareness to, and recognizes the “good stuff” that is already in the works, but also encourages us to pass it on and keep the ball rolling. Each week, prizes will be awarded randomly, with a final Grand Prize on December 3rd.
Vera Gibson of North Vancouver feels that “With many people feeling somewhat discouraged and occasionally helpless to change some of the serious challenges of the world, I wanted to remind people that even small kind acts can lift people’s spirits, strangers and your own. Doing nice things with no thought of reward can make such a difference in people’s lives.”
Gibson states that “What was so inspiring as I began to work on this project was the overwhelming support from everyone I approached, including my husband, Bob Gibson, co-owner of Contact Printing who already ‘pays it forward’ by donating printing to many events on the North Shore every year.”
Dr. Wayne Dyer is quoted as saying, that “giving and receiving are the same thing” it makes both parties feel great. But the thing about paying it forward, is that it doesn’t stop with you. When something good happens, look for a way to do something for someone else. Pass it on.
